Every website owner is fighting to get back links from other websites to increase the PR & ranking on Google search results. But they are not concerned about the internal linking of the site which is also a very important factor in search engine ranking.
Let’s first understand the difference between internal & external linking……
Internal linking is the links on web pages or the website that point to other pages within the same website. External linking is when we put link on one website to another website.
Why Internal linking is important?
Internal linking is very important for any website as:
- It increases the accessibility of the website for users & search engines. Search Engines like Google rewards you for doing things that make the website user’s experience easier and better
- It helps search engines & user to navigate the site easily
- It is a perfect strategy for giving an extra boost to specific pages for specific keywords
- It helps search engines to crawl deep web pages which are away from main menu, navigation bar or home page of the website
- Anchor links helps search engines to co-relate the pages with the overall theme of the website
Internal Linking to get the top ranking on Google or Other Search Engines
As said above Internal linking is very important but I have seen many websites where every 5th-6th word is linked with other page of the website which actually looks very irritating. We should not mistreat this opportunity as spamming.
I have consolidated some best practices of Internal Linking which is good from Search Engines & Users point of view.
1- Utilize every opportunity of effective internal linking like add links in your navigation, header or footer as text links to all your important pages and main sections of the website.
2- Internal page linking thru dynamic drop down menu in DHTML or JavaScript is not a good way of linking as search engines cannot follow links created in JavaScript; they can only follow simple text links. We should use simple text links to link all internal pages of the website.
3- Every page of the website should be maximum 2 clicks away from the home page of the website. E-commerce sites are usually very big in size so in that case search engine might face problem in crawling & indexing all deep level pages without appropriate internal linking.
4- In some times it is not possible to link every page of the website with the main menu or header or footer of the website; in that case internal contextual linking thru web content is a good idea to enhance the accessibility of the site.
5- Try to use relevant keywords as anchor text instead of using “Click here” etc.
6- Always use the same URL when you are linking a specific page. For example, if you want to link your service page (www.example.com/service.html) from other pages of the site then you should always use the same URL. Some people use different URL to link the same page like sometime example.com/service.html & some time www.example.com/service.html, this can create canonicalization issue.
7- Use breadcrumb navigation on sites that will link to other pages often
8- All internal links should work properly. Broken links are not good from both users & search engines perspective.
9- Use site map with all important pages links. It will help search engines & users to search all level web pages. Sitemap is not only effective for SEO, but also has usability benefits.
10- Some web pages may be more popular in the search rankings and receive more links than the rest of your website. You can strengthen these weaker pages by including some contextual links to them from the stronger pages.
11- Check your server logs for 404 errors. fix any broken links and redirect old linked to pages to their new locations
12- Try to use absolute URLs for internal linking as it can help you when you’re reusing content across multiple protocols (such as http and https). Absolute URLs provide you with indirect benefits in unforeseen situations, such as when someone steals your copy and forgets to change the internal links. Absolute URLs also show you exactly where your links lead, whereas links using “…/somewhere.html” structures are ambiguous and, especially in deep-content sites, often cause links to break when pages are moved around. Absolute URLs provides the better control over optimization.
13- Linking page & text should have connection which is actually beneficial for the users. Linking should not be from SE’s point of view.
14- Pages which are not very important from users & search engines point of view should have nofollow attribute while linking with navigational part of the site, because thru linking with those less important pages we are passing our link PRs to pages that aren’t as important. For example: private policy pages, legal terms, thank you pages, shopping carts, sitemap etc. are not very important so we can put a nofollow tag on these pages. You can understand in this way, like you should put nofollow tags on those pages which are not important for (search engine result pages) SERPs as people might not come to your site thru those pages. Basically, every link that you put it, ask yourself “does that page/section need more link weight?”, and if the answer is no, nofollow it. Don’t go overboard though, or else you won’t have any internal links as far as the engines are concerned.
15- Find out a list of pages which are most important for you- from SE’s & Users’ perspective. Try to optimize the internal linking of these pages with appropriate anchor text. If you have several pages for the same product range like in case of e-commerce sites then link the main page to all other pages but you can put nofollow tags on less important pages. Always put a link back from deeper pages to the main page of that specific category.
A well structured internal linking pattern will help SE’s to navigate your site in a better way & in longer way it will help you to get sitelinks in Google.
I am sure these internal linking techniques will be very helpful in your site optimization in a better manner.
Please don’t forget to digg or stumble this article if you really find it helpful for others.

Google has again become generous & reveal some secrets about the use of images & their optimization. I hear a lot of the concerns, questions, thoughts, etc about image optimization.
You might have read many articles on the same topic….It might not be new to you but I found it helpful so thought to share it with all of you.
Images are important component of a website and you will be happy to know that images can bring lots of traffic to your sites, but we have to optimize our images to get the desired results.
Here are image optimization tips from Googlers:
We should use Alt attribute to optimize them, this attribute allows us to specify alternative text for the image if it cannot be displayed for some reason. Alt text (alt tag) is basically a brief description of the image.
It is useful, if a user is viewing your site on a browser that doesn’t support images, or is using alternative technologies, such as a screen reader, the contents of the alt attribute provide information about the picture. Similarly, if you’re using an image as a link, the alt text for that image will be treated similarly to the anchor text of a text link. However, Google don’t recommend using too many images for links in your site’s navigation when text links could serve the same purpose. Also, image optimization makes it easier for image search projects like Google Image Search to better understand your images.
Always use descriptive file names & avoid using image.jpeg, picture1.jpeg etc. For example: if you are inserting image of IBM printer then use the file name ibm-printer.jpeg or ibm-printer.gif etc. Don’t write lengthy file names but try to make it accurate.
Store images in a directory of their own, instead of having image files spread out in numerous directories and subdirectories across your domain; consider consolidating your images into a single directory (e.g. yourdomain.com/images/). This simplifies the path to your images.
Also, use commonly supported file types. Most browsers support JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP image formats. It’s also a good idea to have the extension of your filename match with the
File type.
Also, don’t forget to optimize PDF. You can also use PDF adds-ons from Mozilla that enable you to complete the PDF-Object metadata, place links inside PDFs which did not previously have them.

It’s not very unconventional that what we think is correct or other way round whatever we presume to be wrong, should hold true.
Again a link to the chain…….. some of the myths about PPC…. Here you go!
PPC have impact on organic listing: This is a very common myth about PPC. There is no direct relationship between organic and paid search. Though PPC is a great way to promote the site in the sponsored listings & can get the site easily & quickly noticed by your targeted audience.
#1 position is the only way to get targeted traffic: Yes, it is not necessary to be on the top position to get quality traffic. Top position might give you more no. of click but this does not mean more conversion/sale or lead. In fact many times, advertisers get better conversion rates even when the ad appears in the lower spots. Because people who are serious to buy or in last phases of buying, usually search more deeply and click on the more relevant & convincing ads.
Ad should be displayed all the time (24*7) for better results: This is again a common myth. When you are directly targeting your customers, and you know that your customers are more likely to buy during a specific period of time, you can show your ads only in that time frame. This feature is called ad scheduling (in Adwords). The benefits of ad scheduling are different for different businesses like for some businesses there is no sense to have your ads running in some specific ads. Of course, maximizing the power of ad scheduling will require some testing. Ad Scheduling ensures that your phone doesn’t ring at hours when you aren’t in the office. It is also helpful in measuring ROI based upon time of day and day of the week.
Bid on many keywords for every ad: in my personal opinion, we should bid only on relevant keywords otherwise less relevant keywords will consume the budget & you will get irrelevant traffic. I have seen many peoples who used 100s of keywords in their campaigns & are unable to even keep watch on them.
Keyword matching does not have much to do with: People are not very concerned about the keyword matching option available in Google AdWords. Normally, people use only broad match for all keywords which actually widen the scope of getting more clicks but simultaneously increases the chances of getting irrelevant clicks & less conversions. Keywords matching option is good to better target ads & cost controlling. It can improve CTR, ad position & ROI.
It is good to have generic keywords in campaigns: This is not good to have generic keywords (especially with broad match) in ad groups as they might bring irrelevant visits to your site & exhaust your campaign budget very quickly without generating any ROI. For example: if you are selling financial software then you should not target Software as a keyword because it might send you the visitors who are actually looking for computer software, games software or others.
PPC is expensive: Many of my client initially denied for PPC by saying that this is an expensive marketing option but the fact is that there is no min budget requirement for AdWords campaign set up, you can start your PPC with very little budget. In fact, Google don’t have a fixed minimum bid for a keyword & more interestingly you have to pay less for your more relevant ads on relevant searches.
You should have a website to run AdWords Ads: You can advertise you business online on Google even without having a website. Hosted business pages, a feature for AdWords Starter Edition, will let you do just that. Advertisers can create a hosted business page (an informational webpage) when they sign up for AdWords Starter Edition. You can use a hosted business page to tell people more about your business when they click on your ad.
Number of conversions is a measure of PPC effectiveness: advertisers are some time interrelate conversions with ROI. ROI is the actual measure to define how much money you are making thru your AdWord account not the conversions.
PPC optimization is one time activity: Like SEO, PPC is also a continuous process. We have to keep watch & make the required changes for optimization & better performance. Like your business, pay per click campaigns continues to develop, change and evolve.

I think this is a widespread dilemma for marketers, advertisers & webmasters. Whenever I suggest Social Media Networking/ Marketing to my clients I have been shot with one common question i.e.
“Why Social Networking? This is just waste of time & money.”
Do you really feel so?- I mean in this digital environment where we just can’t survive with traditional marketing approach where we have to shout to sell our products or services.
Well, social media is not just about advertisement and marketing, it’s simply more than that. It’s about people, interaction, humanization of brands, behavioral understanding, user engagement, customer relationship management, loyalty and much more.
We can call it Participatory Marketing where you are not the only person who is talking about your product, brand or services but audiences are actively participating and talking to each other about you. Once you do good work, you have the consumer acting as the evangelist.
Here I am consolidating some stats to tell you why social networking is important?
- almost 40% of adult internet users and 70% of teens use social networking sites monthly
- Online social network users were 3 times more likely to trust their peers’ opinions over advertising when making purchase decisions
- 84% says that they would trust users reviews over a critic
- Consumers wanted to see users reviews and ratings
- 75% of online shoppers read reviews
- 78% of consumers trust the advice of other consumers
- 85% of marketers agree that building customer trust will become marketing’s primary objective
- Social networks are the most popular sites for the coveted 18-24 years old age group, That’s right, social networks beat SE’s, web based email.
- Brands now have cost effective access to more than 500MM engaged users. 250 millions of them are on Facebook
- Youtube is getting almost 11% of all internet traffic
- As per alexa, Five of the top 10 websites are social (Youtube, Facebook, Myspace, Wikipedia and Blogger)
Social networking has become the life blood of businesses. It really helps to show presence everywhere (in web 2.0 world) beyond your own domain & area.
It’s really very helpful in knowing your audiences, their needs & feedback.
According to consumer research, consumers are spending 25-30% of their time online, so ad spend should follow that and stabilize around that level.
Advertising on blogging and social networking sites offers an opportunity to match unique keywords for each ad unit and narrow the targeting directly to the theme you want. Better targeting offers higher response to your ads.
Similarly, mobile marketing has set a new trend in online marketing industry. Now social networking is just a mobile beep away with a social networking platform, now available on GPRS handsets thanks to mobile networking. The service can be accessed through WAP and SMS also. For countries, where mobile penetration is higher than Internet penetration (like India), social networking through mobile will be one handy and cool way to stay connected with the network.
Mobiles; enables users to call or interact directly with a business, provides another avenue for driving revenue. Mobile phones offer more powerful targeting, interactivity and personalization capabilities than the Internet. Merchants can push coupons, store locations, and promotions to mobile users while they are out and about—so the users can put such information to immediate use. This is really very helpful in Local Business Marketing. Mobile phones are also ideal viral marketing tools: because users take their mobile phones everywhere, they can share content with people nearby and forward content to friends and family elsewhere.
I think you should also try to make your business a part of people’s daily conversation.

Google’s “20 percent time” funda again came with a great tool- Google Moderator, which would allow anyone attending a “tech talk” to submit a question, and then give other participants a way to vote on whether or not that question should be asked.
This is a Free tool offered by Google.
Google Moderator allows anyone to create a specific topic (called series) for questions to be asked in. Questions on the Google Moderator page are ranked automatically based on how many positive votes they received. Questions with more positive votes will be ranked higher than a question with less positive votes. To vote a question, simply click the check-mark button for that question. You can also click the X button if you’d like to vote against an existing question.
This way, the most popular and relevant questions would rise to the top so that the presenter or the moderator of an event could run the discussion more efficiently and in a transparent manner.
You should also give it a try.

Father of Internet- “Vint Cerf” has warned that the world is on the verge of running out of the web addresses that allow computers to identify & communicate with each other.
Cerf has stated that there is an immediate need of businesses and consumers to switch to the next generation of net addresses.
IP addresses are very crucial to websites but some network engineers predict that we will run out of them in coming 2 years (in yr. 2010).
Cerf has said that it’s a high time that preparations are made now, otherwise some computers might not be able to go online and the connectivity of the Internet might be damaged.
Now, Internet service providers are needed to get ready for the situation and that time was running out for a smooth transaction.
According to current figure, the existing IPv4 address will run out in 2010 and possibly as early as next year. But, scientist have already kept aside a new system called IPv6, which has been ready for implementation for more than a decade.
Under IPv6, each address has 128 bits and so provides 340 trillion different addresses.
Both the protocol systems will run simultaneously and IPv4 addresses will still work as normal. But if the IPv6 is not widely adopted, then those using it may find themselves unable to connect across the whole internet.
Cerf said consumers needed to be aware of IPv6 and to start checking that the products they buy are IPv6 compatible. Most software & hardware are already marking their products IPv6 ready. It is thought that, properly handled, the effect of the introduction of IPv6 on consumers will be minimal, although eventually home routers may have to be upgraded or swapped so thay can use the longer addresses.

It is really important to make the site structure as simple as possible to make it search engine & user friendly. Content should be organized logically with proper hierarchy. When we are talking of site structure & content management, we should not close our eyes to URLs of the web pages. URLs should be constructed with readable words without so many session IDs, so that human eyes & search engines can read them easily & can also get the idea of the hierarchy of the web pages. For example, if you’re searching for information about Pomeranian Dogs, a URL like http://example.com/dogs/pomeranian will help you decide whether to click that link. A URL like http://www.example.com/index.php?id_bread=360&sid=3a5ebc944f41daa6f849f730f1 is much less appealing to users. Also, search engines are not comfortable with long dynamic URLs with lots of session IDs.
Consider using punctuation in your URLs.
The URL http://www.example.com/general-science.html is much more useful to us than http://www.example.com/ generalscience.html. It is always advisable to use hyphens (-) instead of underscores (_) in URLs.
Excessively complex URLs, with multiple parameters or too many session IDs, can cause a problems for SE crawlers by creating unnecessarily high numbers of URLs that point to identical or similar content on your site. As a result, SE crawling software may consume much more bandwidth than necessary, or may be unable to completely index all the content on your site.
Also long dynamic and complex URLs are difficult to repeat or remember and did not provide any clues for average users as to what a particular resource actually contains. SE’s like Google indexes dynamically generated webpages, including .asp pages, .php pages, and pages with question marks in their URLs. However, these pages can cause problems for SE crawler and may be ignored.
Some best practices to make URLs Search Engine Friendly
- As said above, don not make the URLs too long & make them static with technologies like mod_rewrite for Apache and ISAPI_rewrite for Microsoft. (Note: If you do this, please be sure to include a robots.txt file that disallows the dynamic pages in order to ensure that these pages aren’t seen as having duplicate content.) SE friendly URL is really a important factor of crawling & ranking of the web page. This is also good from other SEO point of view like in case of link building process many directories does not allow very long & dynamic URLs. Also, when people naturally put links then they always give consideration to the URL structure.
- Wherever possible, try to avoid the use of session IDs in URLs. Consider using cookies instead. Try to shorten URLs by trimming unnecessary parameters.
- Try to use relevant keyword If your page is targeting a specific term or phrase (But please don’t try to do spamming with this).
- Consider using a robots.txt file to block SE’s access to problematic URLs. We should consider blocking dynamic URLs, such as URLs that generate search results, or URLs that can create infinite spaces etc.
- Don’t try to make URL’s case sensitive as they can accept both uppercase and lowercase characters.
- Last but not the least, you should create & submit a detailed Sitemap with all important URLs of the site. This is an easy way for you to submit all your URLs to the SE index and get detailed reports about the visibility of your pages.

Clickthrough Rate (CTR) is a very important factor for any AdWords (PPC) campaign. CTR is defined as the number of clicks your ad receives divided by the number of times your ad is shown. Our clicks define the performance of our ads & tell us what works and what doesn’t right away. We should write three to four ads at a time to see the best performing ad which actually brings us the best results.
To increase the clicks (Quality & Relevant clicks) we should take care of the Ads quality, keywords & keywords matching options.
Here we are discussing some tried-and-true tricks (referred by Google itself) to make the Ad Text accurate & more appealing:
• Ad should be To the Point. Include the most relevant information about your business first. Make it concise, and encourage the user to take action.
• Include most relevant & best performing keywords in your ad headline, since that’s what people are looking for. It makes your ad seem more relevant. It will also bold your keywords in Ad text for the relevant search query.
• The best headlines are directly related to the keywords being searched. That makes your ad seem especially relevant to the searcher’s interests.
• Ad should have Call to Action points, like “Buy Now”, “Order Today”, “Online Shop Now”, “Join Now” etc. so that people should know what to expect when they click through.
• Ad description has to convey both the benefits of your product or service and the call to action. Keep everything relevant, short & simple as you can.
• Include prices and promotions. The more information about your product that a user can gain from your ad text, the better. For example, if a user sees the price of a product and still clicks the ad, you know they’re interested in a potential purchase at that price. If they don’t like the price, they won’t click your ad, and you save yourself the cost of that click.
• Choose a Destination URL that promotes the exact product or service your audience is searching for, rather than your usual homepage. Home page is a general page which actually represents your business. For example: if you are dealing in Golf products for 10 different brands but promoting only one brand say “Callaway Golf “ products then it is advisable to use the Callaway product related URL instead of Home page with all product range.
• Don’t forget to Target Your Ads. Take care of language & location targeting to reach your most targeted visitors. Targeting your ad helps eliminate unwanted clicks and gets your ad to the right audience.
• The best way to get your ad closer to the top of the search results is to be more relevant than everybody else. Relevancy of keywords & Ad text will help to increase the Quality Score also.
• Always write clear & compelling Ad text.
• Avoid using company name in Ad text unless you’re advertising an established company with a compelling brand that can distinguish your ad from others. Instead try to use the space in writing appealing & relevant ad.
• Take users to the most relevant landing page of your site.
• Try to Use keyword variations (such as synonyms or alternate spellings).
Technically, your ad position is determined by multiplying the matched keyword’s Quality Score by its maximum cost-per-click (This formula is called Ad Rank). Google reward more relevant keywords and ads by lowering the minimum cost-per-click you need to bid. The best way to improve your ad position without raising your cost is to have the most relevant ad text and keywords possible.
I am sure all these techniques will help to get more clicks that too from relevant/ targeted visitor segments.
Thanks for reading!!
